Our body is naturally receptive and knows how to regulate. Our cell membranes know how to be selective in what they take in and what they hold on to. Perhaps we can trust in this wisdom to absorb just enough emotional energy to be effective and let the rest spill over into the ocean of Self energy. Our brain cells in particular are excellent at receiving and processing information. Neuroscientists confirm that the right brain nonverbally communicates its unconscious states to other receptive right brains.

In limbic structures of the brain, neural synapses are being created and reinforced by repeated firings. Our capacity for receptivity can be found at the synapses, where there are axons called receivers that branch off the neurons. Branching off other neurons are the senders. These neuronal branches transmit chemical messages between one neuron and the next. These don’t actually touch. Between them is a tiny gap, the synapse, through which flow these chemical messages. Joseph LeDoux has said, “You are your synapses. They are who you are.”22

Although it is intriguing to consider that the essence of our identity is actually empty space through which energy and information is flowing, I think of this synaptic activity as being analogous to a resonant relationship. In this gap between sending and receiving is the possibility of change, of changing who we are, or at least changing our habitual reactions. The receptive, Self-led therapist is also sending information of safety, acceptance, and compassion to the client. The right-brain language of Embodied Self is being received as well. The client’s nervous system is receiving that information, which can rewire their habitual relational behaviors. With shifts in the habitual neuronal messages it is now possible for the client’s brain (and body, emotions, beliefs, and behavior) to change. Receiving the messages is the key to neuronal revision.
